Our Programs Results in 2023

1. Breast and Prostate Gland Screening

In collaboration with Associozone Ruvuma and Aga Khan Hospital, HOTA organized an outreach activity for breast and prostate gland screening, which included breast self-exams (BSE). While not a standalone screening method, women are encouraged to be aware of any changes in their breasts and report them to their healthcare providers. The activity screened a total of 128 individuals (24 males and 104 females). This initiative also included education on breast and prostate cancer, as well as guidance on self-examination.

2. Mental Health Problems Awareness Education and Psychosocial Support

During the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in 2023, HOTA provided mental health problem awareness and psychosocial support to those in need along the Caravan route. The organization believes that addressing mental health problems is crucial in combating GBV. Throughout the campaign, HOTA reached 8 regions in Tanzania mainland, including Gairo Morogoro, Bahi Dodoma, Bukoba Kagera, Kigoma, Geita Chato, Tarime Mara, Igunga Tabora, and Manyoni Singida. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about mental health problems as a strategy to end GBV. HOTA collaborated with WiLDAF Tanzania and other partners to reach local market women and men, as well as primary and secondary school students, through educational sessions and awareness campaigns. The campaign reached more than 3,000 people.

3. Sexual Reproductive Health Education in Schools for Girls

In 2023, HOTA continued its field visits to 4 secondary schools to provide sexual reproductive health education to girls, focusing on managing their menstrual cycle and hygiene. A total of 450 girls received menstrual hygiene education in the Dar es Salaam region. Additionally, HOTA distributed 240 sanitary pads to enable students to attend school comfortably during their periods.

4. Social Media Webinar Session on Mental Health

In 2023, HOTA organized a webinar session via live stream to X space, focusing on how difficult relationships and social media can contribute to mental health problems, and providing strategies to overcome these challenges. The session directly reached 446 people and indirectly reached 1568 people through social media.

Achievements:

  1. A total of 208 individuals (78 males and 130 females) received psychosocial support.
  1. Awareness of mental health problems and GBV increased.
  1. 450 girls received menstrual hygiene education in the Dar es Salaam region, and 240 sanitary pads were distributed to enable their attendance at school during their periods.
  1. A total of 446 people were reached directly through X space and social media, with an additional 1568 people reached indirectly.

Our Program Results in 2022

1. Provision of Psychosocial Support for Mental Health Issues

a) Providing Psychosocial Education for Mental Health:

In collaboration with TYCC and HER Initiatives, HOTA visited Muhimbili National Hospital to offer psychosocial support services to individuals with mental health problems. A total of 54 participants (21 males, 34 females) received psychosocial support. During these sessions, patients shared their experiences, citing causes such as violence from partners, parents, and relatives.

b) Providing Psychosocial Support for Vulnerable Children:

In collaboration with the Joyful Foundation, HOTA provided psychosocial support and other forms of assistance to vulnerable children in local centers. A total of 67 children (54 males, 23 females) received these services and support.

2. Awareness Creation Against Gender-Based Violence

In 2022, HOTA participated in the 16 Days of Activism Campaign against Gender-Based Violence organized by WiLDAF, in collaboration with the government and MKUKI members. Recognizing that many GBV perpetrators have mental health problems, HOTA also raised awareness about mental health issues that can lead to gender-based violence.

3. Sexual Reproductive Health Education in Schools for Girls

During 2022, HOTA conducted field visits to 3 secondary schools to provide sexual reproductive health education to girls, focusing on menstrual cycle management and hygiene. A total of 254 girls received menstrual hygiene education in the Dar es Salaam region. Additionally, HOTA distributed 300 sanitary pads to enable students to attend school comfortably during their periods.

4. Campaign on Polio and COVID-19 Vaccination

In September 2022, HOTA joined the government’s campaign to mobilize parents to vaccinate siblings under 5 years old against polio at authorized dispensaries. A total of 543 people (108 males, 435 females) were mobilized on the importance of polio vaccination. HOTA also utilized social media and publications to promote COVID-19 vaccination, directly reaching 156 individuals and indirectly reaching 664 individuals through social media platforms, including WhatsApp groups.

5. Commemoration of World AIDS Day on December 1, 2022

In collaboration with Kinondoni Municipal, HOTA organized World AIDS Day under the theme “Imarisha Usawa” (Strengthening Equality). HOTA reached 448 people (205 males, 243 females) with HIV/AIDS awareness messages through shared flyers and posters. Additionally, 104 individuals received condoms distributed during the event. HOTA was awarded a certificate of participation by Kinondoni Municipal.

  1. HOTA reached 448 people (205 males, 243 females) with HIV/AIDS awareness messages, and 104 individuals received condoms during the World AIDS Day event.
  1. HOTA was awarded a certificate of participation by Kinondoni Municipal.
